Since dropping her Mango EP a few months ago and Noir before then, The Olawumi has been working towards the release of her next EP, the Crowns EP. To bide time until its release, the New Jersey-based songstress with Nigerian roots has released a single called Over. The soul-trap star departs slightly from the themes she expresses in the song Come Back from the Mango EP where she is heard […]
As prepares to release an album in the spring/summer of 2015, Kelela has shared with us an undressed version of her song, “Enemy.” The original version which appeared on her acclaimed mixtape Cut 4 Me was a dark, almost moody song with a late 90s R&B bounce. It sounded like it might have been on the Romeo Must Die soundtrack. Now it has been stripped of all the bells and […]
The last time we heard from Faarrow was over a year ago when they released the singles Say My Name and Rule The World. We learnt in this period that they are also attracted to mash-ups. They performed this mash-up of Wide Awake and No Church In The Wild and Gotye’s Somebody That I Used to Know and J.Cole’s Can’t Get Enough for example. Throughout 2014, they have been dropping […]
Before the release of her EP For Madeleine last month, Seinabo Sey gave us this acoustic cover of Clean Bandit’s 90s-inspired electro hit Rather Be featuring Jess Glynne. Her version of the song bears almost no resemblance to the buoyant original. Even without the piano and the monochromatic visuals, her smoky, smouldering vocals create a mellower, more sombre song. She truly made the song her own.
M.anifest just released the video for his single No Shortcut to Heaven, the fourth single from his EP Apae: The Price of Free. You might have noticed that it was a favourite on his Apae Taxi Diaries. Or not. It was produced by G Mo and features another Ghanaian music titan Obrafour. M.anifest’s team have gone all out for the video. In a narrative that seems to tie in with […]

In the lead up to the release of her upcoming album Hey Hey in September, Liberian-Swedish singer Mapei has shared two musical pieces to whet our appetites until then. First she shares the Shift K3Y remix of her song Change, a song for which she shared this sentimental and rather cool lyric video not too long ago. It might be described as the sensual house version of Change and it […]
To many, Nigerian rapper M.I’s ascent in music was interrupted by a deafening silence over the last couple of years. The rapper was christened Nigeria’s Hip Hop Messiah after releasing a few critically acclaimed projects such as Talk About It, MI2 and Illegal Music. But then, to the audience’s dismay, M.I. unceremoniously walked off stage. Indeed, he has evaded the spotlight for quite some time, preferring instead to produce music for […]
Kelela adds to her growing oeuvre with the release of OICU which was produced by P. Morris and features Le1f. The single comes as we await Kelela’s full-length album later this year. The seductive tune – which could be mistakenly cataloged as a sensual binaural beat – starts off floating on a dreamscape but the moony ambience is interrupted by a tripping bass that continues to pulsate or rather syncopate […]

Kwabs has made a dramatic return with his new single, “Walk,” a dark, theatrical song with an arresting piano – it might be the theme song of a trailer for an epic like 300 or Game of Thrones. With his signature baritone, he sings about being in a situation where knows it would be detrimental for him to stay. He wants to evade his decline and he knows what he […]
