As 2010 nears its end, AfriPOP! takes a look at the African models who rocked the runway (and fashion world) this year. From eye candy David Agbodji to fierce Kinee Diouf, take a look at the African models who represented us on international runways this year…
While African designers may complain of getting little exposure on the international stage, it looks like American designers are certainly paying attention to the happenings on African runways. This year’s most surprising collection came from rocker Gwen Stafani’s label, L.A.M.B., which was a colorful collection of African-print motifs splashed on everything from mini-dresses to tailored suits.
Sudanese model Alek Wek has graced the covers of a myriad of international fashion mags – from ESSENCE to British Vogue. Most recently she jumped for joy on the cover of Elle South Africa’s 14th Anniversary issue. AfriPOP! celebrates this African fashion and style icon with seven of our favorite covers.
You will recall, last year’s Africa Fashion Week was co-branded by the African style glossy magazine Arise. A press release sent out at the end of last year said that relationship was no more.
However, Dr Precious Moloi Motsepe, Chairperson of African Fashion International maintained, “We remain focused on maximizing the enormous potential Africa FashionWeek has shown, and the impact Cape Town Fashion Week continues to have on the industry.”
And so the show went on. AfriPOP! was at the Joburg leg which kicked off last week Wednesday, and also at the Africa Fashion Awards which brought things to an interesting close.
