African Quotables: ‘Nigerians are Tired of Keeping Their Mouths Shut,’ Says Nneka
March 16th, 2012Nneka recently spoke with AfriPOP:
On Occupy Nigeria:
“I was in Nigeria for the Occupy Nigeria movement. People use the opportunity not just to stress the removal of oil subsidies, this was an opportunity to express their grief and frustration they’ve been having for a long time. People became more courageous to speak up about corruption. People came together – it was amazing. Muslims, Christians… I think it was the beginning of something bigger. Nigerians are tired of keeping their mouths shut.”

On whether she’s ever afraid of being targeted because she is so political:
“I’ve had my issues with politicians in Nigeria. I am passionate about what I’m doing, and I am who I am. This is the path I have been given…I know that there are many people out there who don’t have the opportunity to speak their minds. I wish I could be those people’s voice. I don’t see myself as the important person – I am being used, and if not me, it would be somebody else. This has to come through me and I am free for that power to have that access to me.”
Nneka’s second album Soul is Heavy made its US debut last week.
