So musically Tanzania is the country doing the most right now. They’re being so extra with their music and the rest of us can’t help but love it and also envy it (be truthful now!)
We know the biggest industries are Nigeria and South Africa, but Tanzania is the East African darling that’s showing up and showing out. Even Kenyans keep commenting kuti their place has been usurped. Bambi, even Ugandans never hesperredit.
Bongo Flava is so hot the likes of Ne-Yo are saying make we collabo with Diamond Platnumz. As usual with his MVs I just have questions on top of mafunso – who are those purple-clad people opening the doors of the house?
Tuende TZ music, let’s get the rest of the world hip to and engaged with your flava. Hip Africans are already singing its praises, but for those of us who were a little slow, here’s a short primer, just 10 of the biggest songs out of TZ. Warning: Vanessa Mdee features heavily on this list. I like her.
(And yes it’s 11 songs, it could easily have been 20, these guys are always making music that’s fire.)
Darassa feat Ben Pol – Muziki
Who would not love a song called Muziki? Especially when it’s this fun. Darassa is also one of TZ’s hottest rappers, no doubt. Combine his talents with an East African king of R&B, Ben Pol, and the result is eargasmic.
MwanaFA featuring Vanessa Mdee – Dume Suruali
She wants that Gucci, Fendi… spend it on a girl like her. It’s that cash money mentality, gotta talk about it. According to YouTube translators it’s about a girl who is materialistic but isn’t realistic in love.
Vanessa Mdee – Cash Madame
Love this song and the video – get that paper, girls (heist films are hot right now, imagine this in that Twitter-driven Lupita film’s OST.) She’s not known as Vee Money for nothing.
Director Justin Campos always with the flirty camera angles, loving the dancing body and full-on colour.
Vanessa Mdee and Jux – Juu
Honestly, is Vee Money like the most collaboratingest artist on the continent? We see you everywhere! Not complaining, there’s a good reason so many want to collabo with her. Pretty song, gorgeous Africans cavorting on the beach (with quite a Janet Jackson and also Beyoncé vibe in this video) what’s not to like? In case you wondered, these two are an item in real life. So now you’re caught up.
Saida Karoli – Orugambo
More of a traditionalist vibe. This lovely song, and accompanying video, has done quite well in a short time.
Rayvanny – Zezeta
He’s a lot in the mould of Diamond Platnumz, who is the biggest musical export out of TZ so far.
Ommy Dimpoz and Alikiba – Kajiandae
There is no Bongo Flava list complete without Ali Kiba. Full stop. It’s basically an order to dance, this song.
Reekado feat. Vanessa Mdee – Move
Technically this is a Nigerian track, but I’m giving it to Tanzanians as well. The Tanzanian mover and shaker Vee Money is a fixture on this list idc idc.
Navy Kenzo – Feel Good
I absolutely love this song, and can’t choose which is my favourite Navy Kenzo track. But this is great when you need a pick-me-up or actually feeling so good. It works for any time! Another Justin Campos-directed video. Did TZ give him an exclusive contract or what? Not complaining, he does beautiful work.
Navy Kenzo – Bajaj ft. Patoranking
Said I loved Navy Kenzo so here they are again, this time in a collaboration with Patoranking. Nahreel and Aika are Navy Kenzo, and they’re also a couple. Nahreel has produced so many of the major Bongo Flava albums, and songs for many artists (some of the artists are on this list.) His own label, The Industry Studios, is his entrepreneurial arm.
And that’s a small taste of Bongo Flava. Thank you Tanzania for making Africa even hotter than it already is, and in a good way!
