Adelle Nqeto’s debut single “Make Something Beautiful” is the song you’re going to want to hear over and over again. Nqeto’s voice is simply mesmerising and it has to be said, something beautiful.
Nqeto’s breathy, airy notes make you think of each line’s delivery, and meaning. She looks like a slip of a person, and her ethereal voice matches her small frame, yet the lyrics have a power that catch you off guard.
“We’re a mess down here
Let’s be honest”
Honesty is definitely the preserve of the most poetic and soulful of folk singers, and this singer-songwriter has as an admission in this song. It’s a plea in the most simple, heartfelt form. Religious or not, it strikes a chord.
The arrangement is simple, allowing her voice to soar. I keep thinking of young indie sensation Birdy (with a less deep timbre) or perhaps something of the lead from Nineties indie folk band The Sundays. But Adelle Nqeto is just herself, unique and wonderful.
This is absolutely one of my favourite music discoveries of the year.
