I have Burna Boy’s ‘Pree Me’ on repeat. It’s taking me to different places, melancholia is a friend at times. There is something so soothing about dealing with hateration in song form. Burna Boy just coolly rapping about being on his toes resonates deeply. It’s hard not to think about how folks try to break your spirit when you are doing the best you can with the cards you’ve been dealt. With the Fees Must Fall student protests raging across South Africa, I like that his video spotlights people in different situations, including a young dance student in a challenging environment. It seems small, but artists continue to pay attention to issues and that in itself is something.
South Africans, from a place where it’s hard enough to get a visa if you’re African, are ready to give him citizenship over this song (check the comments) The song travels well, and the video, posted on the Noisey YouTube channel, isn’t bad at all. ‘Pree Me’ is for the first single off his Redemption EP, which has been steady burning and bringing warmth to everyone who hears it since it dropped in late September.
Burna Boy stays doing the most, not just lately. Also, check out his Noisey Questionnaire of Life, it might just put a smile on your face.
