Little Girl With a Big Voice: Mila Smith and the Skyscrapers Sing About Summertime

It’s Spring in Cape Town right now, and Summer is on its way with its big sounds, big moments and big voices. One of those voices you should listen to is Mila Smith’s, the twelve-year-old vocalist fronting the Skyscrapers, along with drummer Dan Buchalter (eleven) and Leo Letschert (also eleven) on keys. Mila is the daughter of a South African mother and a Ugandan father, and she writes the lyrics for the Skyscrapers’ original music.

I hear several possible influences when I listen to Mila but I still can’t place her: is she a little bit Lykke Li, and a little bit Lianne La Havas? Is she also a whole lot Laura Mvula? I don’t know, but I have this feeling she’s going to be a force to be reckoned with when she’s older. Unstoppable, really.

The Skyscrapers’ 2016 EP “Possibility” is all of the lovely. Have a listen to their rendition of Summertime:
