Kafui: Ghanaian Heritage Infused into Natural Hair and Skin Products

facebook cover 4
My name is Kafui Awoonor. I make natural hair and skin products. I love clothes, always have. I think its a great way of expressing myself. I dress mostly according to how I feel. I prefer to be over dressed than under dressed.
My fashion sense is very much a mix – Ghana girl who grew up in Holland who is a hippy at heart. There is always a little funk to it but mostly feminine. Lately I have been loving dresses and high waisted skirts  and since summer is on its way, that’s what I look forward to the most!

This is one of the dresses I am looking forward to wearing a lot. I had it made here in Cape Town from Ghanaian fabric that I brought back when I visited my family in February. My two sisters and I all have the same fabric and it will be fun to see what they do with the fabric. This dress makes me feel very elegant and regal.

This is me in my kitchen with my products. I started this journey of returning to my roots years ago after not being happy with what was available to me when looking for products for my skin. I started with a base of Shea butter from Ghana and it evolved from there. Now I have a line of different products for hair, face and body. Realizing that there were so many people interested in natural hair and skin products pushed me to give up my comfortable day job and pursue this full time. When I think back to when I lived in Amsterdam, I remember always making my own stuff, mixing things together. Nail polish, makeup, creams. I've always enjoyed being self-sufficient. Self-care is really important to me. Nourishing yourself from the inside out and outside in. This is my way of providing a product line that helps with that and is free from chemicals and preservatives.nMy kitchen is the soul of my home and also where I build my business.

This dress has great sentimental value to me. It's my grandmother's dress. She is one of the most amazing women I have ever met. Very strong and gentle all in one. She is 94 now! She had this dress made in the late 60's or early 70's. I found it in her attic when I was helping her clear it out in 2014. It fits me like it was made for me. And it has pockets! When I wear it, I feel strong and feminine.

This is me in my comfort zone. Yoga has been part of my life for the past 10 years now. I started with Bikram yoga and now also practise Vinyasa as well. Last year November I spent a month doing a yoga teacher training course. Till this day the best gift I ever gave myself. Since then I have maintained my daily physical practise and meditation as well. It’s the way I start my day. The pants I am wearing in this picture are my favourite yoga pants that I got 2 years ago in Amsterdam. They are worn out but I love them so much that its going to be hard to say goodbye.

This outfit is also one I'm looking forward to wearing when the weather is a bit more stable. High-waisted skirts and pants are my thing. They feel comfortable and you can dress them up or down. I'm wearing heels here but if i was spending the day running erranda or hanging out, I would combine this with one sneakers. My favourite sneakers from Nike match perfectly with this outfit.
