A fortuitous meeting of Fela Kuti and Future.
For a few years now, shuttling between Oklahoma City, Dallas and Accra, rapper, producer and DJ Dex Kwasi slangs stories of sex, sakawa, faith, politics, hustling and drugs over Afro Trap – his Highlife and bass hybrid invention.
In the wake of Trap’s seemingly infinite global ascendancy, expect to see more and more African sub-genres pairing up with Southern rap’s popular offshoot. The likes of Dex Kwasi will turn this from a trend into more permanent evidence of the way Black cultures around the world overlap and resemble each other.
Osibisa’s classic Survival sampled here provides the bedrock for Dex Kwasi’s tribal turn-up on Avenor.
