The low down: Classically trained singer and pianist Laura Mvula cut her teeth with vocal performance and teaching ensemble Black Voices. Although Birmingham is home to this singer/songwriter, on the strength of her song She (out on 22 October) I suspect the entire world will be her stomping ground soon.

The verdict: The high priestess of soul would bestow a blessing, I am sure of it! With this arsenal of incredible young female singer/songwriters that England is churning out – Lianne La Havas, Jessie Ware, now Laura Mvula – it’s really hard not to be excited.
