Born in Germany to Liberian parents and now living in the US, Brandie Maxwell is the most jet-setter blogger we know, and the author of Out and About Africa, where she shares her passion for all things visually beautiful. This is where we go for inspiration on style, fashion, interior decor, photography and travel. It’s a real feast for the eyes!
Was there a particular incident or moment that made you want to start your blog?
I started the blog back in 2008 when I was living in Southern Sudan. My experiences working there were so interesting, funny, frustrating and every other emotion out there that I wanted a space to document that for friends and family who I couldn’t communicate with on a regular basis. The blog has really transitioned with me as I have moved from one chapter in my life to another and allowed me to really explore aspects of my life which really had no other outlet.
What memorable post can you point our readers to as one of your highlights so far?
Very tough question! If anything, I would suggest readers click on the “art” tab and check out those posts. With such a huge emphasis on African fashion in the blogsphere, art sometimes gets overlooked, yet there are so many AMAZING African artists who are producing such a wide variety of art that deserves to be seen and appreciated by all audiences.
What kind of changes have you seen happening in the African blogosphere from the time you started blogging (if any)?
It has seriously exploded since I started blogging and it’s been very wonderful to see all the changes! There is also a high level of professionalism and very fun personalities being reflected on the various sites. I also love the common goal that those in the African blogoshere have of really highlighting that the continent and the people are so much more than has traditionally been portrayed.
Tell us your 3 style inspirations right now.
Eek, another tough question! At the moment, I’m back to rocking my summer clothes since it’s in the 90s here in Iraq. When i get back to the joy of fall in the U.S., I’m going to continue rocking this skirt because it’s by far my best recent purchase. It literally does feel like liquid! Pencil skirts are always a ”must have” for fall/winter especially in bright colors like orange, yellow and turquoise (not to mention they ever-staple, black). Finally, I always love the feminity of a fun printed blouse and right now I’m craving polka dots so this blouse could definitely work in my closet! Oh…and basically anything from the fall (or any season) collection by Milly is 100% inspiration!
thank you brandie! we love ya! x
