For the next six days Berlin will play host to an exciting array of African contemporary dance performance through ‘The Border Border Express Festival’. By featuring a diverse works from both up-and-coming and more established choreographers the producers want to challenge Eurocentric perceptions of African dance, which in their words are ‘far from decolonised’.
The festival opens tonight with the celebrated “Empreintes“(Imprints) by promising Congolese choreographer DeLaVallet Bidiefono with his Compagnie Baninga. Other featured artists include Salia Sanou and Seydou Boro from Burkina Faso, Opiyo Okach from Kenya and Nelisiwe Xaba from South Africa who will give 30 minutes solos and duets. The program is also complemented by music concerts, a documentary and a photo exhibition at the Institut Français with portraits of dancers by Antoine Tempé.
