There’s no better time to be proudly African than the present. It seems everywhere you look nowadays — from Broadway to international runways — there is Africa. And when it comes to fashion, there is plenty of African inspiration to be found. Even First Lady Michelle Obama can attest to this (more about that later).

No longer bound by our complicated past a fresh crop of African fashion designers, editors and are pushing the boundaries of African style. Whether it’s in the pages of Vogue or W Magazine, or designing for a French design house, here are a few Africans who are pushing the culture forward and determining what’s hot and what’s next.

To observer. do you honestly think every african country is uniformly and visibly represented in the sports, arts, literature and entertainment? for the longest time most african models in the western world were solely from the horn (somalia, ethiopia etc) but that did not stop me from celebrating in their success even though I am from West Africa. What happens if the top five most influential people in fashion all happened to be from Senegal? Should the author of the article doctor the list in the name of inclusivity at the expense of accuracy? Should we talk to FIFA about decreasing the number of West African teams who rightfully qualify for the world cup so that more East African teams can get a shot? Frankly i think thou doth protest much :-)

I like Afripop as it is but I think it can only become better through constructive suggestions. instead of "Africa is not only Nigeria and Ghana", If you have an idea for a story, why not pitch it to them or better yet see if you can become a contributor?

    Respectfully

I hope you understand my point tho and hope you don't consider it offensive ... if this was, let's say Nijapop.com or Westafro.com, country or region specific website, I wouldn't have bothered to comment.

I understand you have to defend your website from criticism, but as your reader, all I am saying is that you reporting seems quite biased. :) I click here and there, only few countries dominate most of the topics; a Ghanian or a Nigerian would definitely feel more at home here than a Somalian, Eritrean, Egyptian, Sudanese, or Ethiopian, etc; yet the website's title is AfriPop?! I have no problem with either Ghana, Nigeria or Kenya being represented here, but I have a problem when someone refers me to an 'African' website and I find almost nothing on my country or my neighbors, and there is plenty of information out there on these countries.

Just protesting out loud, nothing personal :)

Thanks Observer! We're pretty aware Africa is not only Nigeria and Ghana. We appreciate your suggestion - and remember we never said this was THE definitive list. We'll be sure to keep out eye on Ms. Aberra.

I am surprised, again, you left out Amsale Aberra, an influential fashion designer from Ethiopia, who is well known for her sophisticated 'forever modern' bridal fashion and owns her boutique in Madison Avenue: http://nazret.com/blog/index.php/2009/10/27/ethiopia_s_own_fashion_designer_amsale_a_2010 ...

Africa is not only Nigeria and Ghana, people please!!!
