Lets face it. Most of the songs born on the back of this whole world cup thing have ranged between silly to cringey. It’s not been all bad though. We’ve enjoyed some prize television moments, these being our favourite three for different reasons:
Blk Jks with Alicia Keys. We haven’t come across a proper tribute to South Africa’s most unapologetic pop star until this. You could hear the entire stadium gasp when Alicia Keys, backed by Blk Jks, drew for the late Brenda Fassie’s Too Late For Mama. We don’t know which African American superstar would care enough about an African audience to do this. Thata Alicia Mhkize!
We had to double take again and again for this one. Tumi is not known first and foremost for pop crossover antics. That whole thing with Brickz seems like a Doctor Octagon collabo compared to this back and forth with Columbia’s most famous hips singer Shakira. Get yours Tumi!
Say what you will about R Kelly, this is a man who knows how to make cheesy hold-hands anthem believable. Here he is on bended knees and everything at the kick off World cup match with the Soweto Spiritual Choir, belting out the least celebrated and, in our opinion, the best world cup song to emerge from the heap of proposed anthems.
