Tabi Bonney Rocks Fat Baby
It’s officially CMJ week in New York City! The College Music Marathon and Film Festival is a week-long, city-wide music fest showcasing some of the most promising talent in the world. We’ve decided to hit as many shows as our bodies will allow us to. So with a drink in our hand and our camera lens zoomed in we were all geared up for the Moodswing 360 show last night at Fat Baby. The evening granted some noteworthy performances, with a lineup including Mann (Mercury/Island Def Jam), Roxy Cottontail, Chris Young The Rapper and Tabi Bonney and the Far East Movement.
An unexpected treat last night was the West Coast-raised Chris Young The Rapper. We know what you’re thinking: wait, another rapper from Cali laced in skinny jeans? Young blind-sided the audience with his undeniable talent. Over electronic-fused classic R&B and folk rock samples, the rapper strongly exhibited his lyrical finesse taking the stage with intensity, captivating the crowd and handing out a solid dose of verbal elixir. Definitely one to be kept on your radar.
The man we came to see, Tabi Bonney, finally hit the stage with back up dancers, The Beat Ya Feet Kings (Google ‘em), in tow. Bonney gave a high energy performance, keeping pace with the seemingly motor-powered dance duo. In addition to his current MTV2/Internet hits, we got to sample some gems from his vault including the neo-soul driven “Escalator.” In the middle of his set, Bonney brought out Niki Jean from his side project, the Cry Babies. Bonney later told AfriPOP! that he would now be doing music with the Cry Babies and saying bye-bye to his solo act. Wait, WHAT? Either way, check for Top of the Year and Fresh coming soon from Bonney.
