Tumi and the Volume do London
In their near-decade long existence Tumi and the Volume have maintained their reputation in South Africa as the most travelled band of their generation with just two albums to their credit – 2004′s Live at the Bassline and their 2006 self-titled set.
Much has been said about the condescending attitudes that daunt the world music circuit, but its followers remain faithful and its purveyors stay fed. That’s how TATV have made their name bigger arguably on summer festival stages across Europe and in Canada than in their own country.
Surprisingly they’ve only ever gigged in the UK once before. Their current foreign stint has taken them to the South of France and brings them to the Barbican in London on October 27th. Here, they’ll share a stage with Freshlyground, the other young South African band whose multi-cultural make-up and easy pop appeal makes them the darling of liberal arts media like the UK Guardian. Tumi and The Volume play a more intimate set at central London bar/restaurant Momo’s the next day before they’re off to Nordic Europe as is their now annual tradition. –Phi
